Amendments to Workers' Compensation and Rehabilitation Act 2003 impact Return to work assist for insurers

Following recent amendments to sections (s220 and s221) of the Workers' Compensation and Rehabilitation Act 2003, Q-COMP's Return to work assist program is now mandatory for all insurers that close a claim where the injured worker is unable to return to their former employer.

Changes under s231 and s267 specify that the worker has an obligation to manage their injury by participating in the return to work program to which they have been referred. Return to work assist is a free initiative assisting injured workers who do not have a job to return to after a workplace injury. The program provides early access to current return to work services at no cost and if necessary, identifies government-funded programs to suit the needs of the individual.

Return to work assist can also link injured workers with appropriate external service providers. Since its implementation in September 2008, the program has continued to grow and achieve strong results with more than 700 referrals. Q-COMP's goal is to offer injured workers a supportive program that delivers successful return to work outcomes. By taking a personalised approach to each and every case, the team have been able to provide a positive and rewarding experience for those referred.
